Part of the Clan November 14, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — erikaivory @ 4:03 am

This is an article that I had the honor and pleasure of having published in SHE Magazine….I hope my family is honored:)

Part of the Clan

You would never see my name on the MSN home page. I have never been to an awards show and not much comes up when you google my name… However, I am used to being stared at and stopped frequently by passersby with questions.  You see, I am the third born of ten children.  Yes, you heard right, I am one of ten.  I am not 89, did not grow up in West Virginia – and yes, my parents did realize where children come from.
Due to the size of the Edmond clan we received quite a bit of attention.  Not many people have such a large family these days, so people were always interested in our story and had lots of questions.  We are a unique mix, especially now as we are almost all grown and displaying such individual personalities and gifts.  There are three girls and seven boys among us, and we range in age from 15 to 42 years old.  Technically my older brother and sister are my father’s children and my half-brother and sister, but my parent’s have been married since my half-siblings were 3 and 1 so they have always been around.  I won’t bore you with the details but I truly could write another whole article about the amazing qualities and story behind each sibling.

Just for fun I thought I would give the sibling run down:
Kelly married to Richard, children are Caroline(married to Jonathan), Laura, Aubrey, Nathaniel, Kathryn, Evelyn, Grace and Jesse
Damon married to Kim, children are Jackson and Julia
Erika married to Mark, children are McCall, Haig and Eli
TJ engaged to Mary
Karl married to Stephanie, children are Taryn and Sean Patrick
Jeremiah married to Erin
Maura married to Ben, children are Reilley and Layla
Jacob, seriously dating Danielle
Marshall, college student
Ben, high school student

My parents met in Colorado and were as different as can be.  They are truly the poster child for the “opposites attract” slogan.  Mom was a good Catholic school girl from Detroit who loved to snow ski so she ended up at a small Catholic college in Colorado.  She met my dad who was a tough, street-wise young man who had already been married and had two little ones to take care of.  They seemed to bring out the best in each other and fell in love.  Despite the odds and parental concerns, they started a life together.  Neither ended up with a college degree, but they both had a superior work ethic, a lot of common sense, a deep desire to build a strong family and a whole lot of stubborn tenacity.  They have had, and still deal with, the struggles that life brings.  My dad is a recovering alcoholic.  When I was six years old, there were four little Edmonds at that point, and my mom loved him enough to make him get help. In the midst of rehab my dad came face to face with The Father that he had never really experienced before.  The Lord reached down and changed him from the inside out and began to heal a lot of wounds that the world and the enemy had inflicted on him.
My mom had surrendered her life to Christ years before when she was in a near fatal car accident that left her swimming for her life in the near freezing Colorado River.  She told the Lord that if she survived she would live for Him.  The Lord provided the miracle and Mom did her best to hold up her end of the deal, even in the midst of a rocky marriage.  So my parents became true committed followers of our Saviour when I was six years old.  I have seen them live out the struggles and joys of growing in the Lord.  My parents did many, many things well as parents and one of them was truly living out the journey of their faith.  They would share with us what they learned from Bible study, and they would admit when they were struggling or when they messed up.  The reality of what a true walk with the Lord is, Him journeying with us, has been a tremendous gift to me.
My parents very openly taught us that children are a gift from the Lord, and they would gladly accept as many of them as the Lord blessed them with.  This meant that money was very tight.  We moved around a lot until I was in junior high as my parents learned to follow God’s voice and be obedient in all areas of their lives.  As children, our faith in the Lord grew as we saw Him provide for our physical needs with unexpected checks arriving in the mail when the bank account was empty, bare cupboards being filled by grocery bags arriving on our doorstep anonymously, being blessed by civic groups at Christmas time and even surprise Santas leaving boxes of gifts on our porch Christmas morning.  God was so good to us and our parents were faithful to give God the credit for being so faithful.  They pointed us to Him continuously.

Family came first in the Edmond clan.  Any free time they had, which was precious because they both worked hard and long hours, was spent as a family.  We would go for long drives on Sunday afternoons.  We had dinner together just about every night.  One of my favorite memories is how we would spend free afternoons discovering new playgrounds.  The whole family came to all our sporting events and tried to come to away games as much as possible.  This was a big deal because we had a little minivan that was rigged up by my dad with three baby seats bolted to the back of the driver’s and passenger’s seats.  It was the only way to make all the safety seats fit and allow everyone a seat belt.  We certainly couldn’t afford a 15 passenger van, and at the time that was what worked.  We all laugh today as we think of the things we did to make life as a large family work.
Do we all get along?  Of course not.  There are a lot of strong personalities among us, but no matter how we may disagree – we truly love each other.  We have a strong desire to bring honor to the Edmond name and we were always taught that you don’t just represent the Edmonds, more importantly you represent Christ.  Some of us are closer than others.  As in most families the three girls try to keep communication open and as frequent as possible.  Thank goodness for the internet, our individual blogs and email.  The recent years have brought new, grown-up and very difficult struggles.  We have experienced financial difficulties, outside betrayal, extreme health concerns and serious conflict as a result of these struggles.  However, the Lord is good and our family remains intact.  Part of growing up is learning how to love in, during and through conflict.  The end result is that conflict has been the catalyst for growth and deeper relationships.  We see God in the midst of the pain and the challenges.
Family get-togethers are less frequent due to our large numbers.  We end up having weddings or a new baby about every two years.  Six out of the ten of us are married and we already have 17 grandchildren among us.  We are spread out geographically and call Georgia, Colorado, South Carolina and Canada home.  I have one brother still in high school, two in college, one sister married to a pastor (they have 8 children and homeschool), another sister that is a stay-at-home mom and married a fellow from Pittsburgh, a brother that is a computer software designer, a brother that is the lead singer for the band The Beggar’s Guild, another brother that is studying toward his master’s in counseling in Canada and another brother that is the drummer for the band Manchester Orchestra.  My oldest niece is actually four months older than my youngest sister.  So it can be confusing when my 16 year-old nephew hangs out with his 15 year-old uncle.  These are some of the fun dynamics of a large family.
As a mother I now have such a different perspective of what it means to have a large family.  I have three small children and I cannot imagine more than tripling my work load.  The responsibility my parents carried overwhelms me.  Certainly no one is a perfect parent.  The longer I am a parent the more grace I allow my parents in the hopes that my own children will someday give me grace.  My parents taught me the depth of commitment, working hard and doing whatever it takes to get the job done, loving people unconditionally, never giving up on family and trusting the Lord.  Being part of an unusually large family has taught me that everyone has to do his/her part, when you see something that needs to be done… just do it, be part of the solution not part of the problem, blood is truly thicker than water, it is not always just about me and love covers over a multitude of wrongs.  I am so thankful for my parents, Leo and Midge Edmond, my siblings (Kelly, Damon, TJ, Karl, Jeremiah, Maura, Jacob, Marshall and Ben), my journey, and that no matter where I roam I will always be proud to be part of the Edmond clan.

Family Nights #5 and #6 November 13, 2008

We did Voting Night the eve before elections.  We made our own voting booth with ballots.  We voted on dinner and had posters and “I Voted” stickers.  Cheese Pizza and Ooey Gooey Chocolate Croissants won for our menu.  Someone came on tv (wink, wink) and announced the winner and balloons were released!

The kids helped make dessert while we waited for the pizza.  After dinner we talked about God’s Sovereignty and the importance of both the freedom of religion and praying for our leaders.  It was a fun night.  Vanessa posts about it here too.

Tonight the Browns were not able to join us but the boys were asking about family night so we went ahead with Wipe Out Night.  This summer we enjoyed watching the game show Wipe Out.  The contestants fight through crazy obstacle courses that involve lots of mud, water and falling.  We found Eli pretending to be on the show a couple of times so we thought they might enjoy a real obstacle course:)

We had a might man’s meal with chicken legs, loaded mashed potatoes and hearty green beans.  We talked over dinner about how the contestants on Wipe Out all wear protective gear and our spiritual man needs protective gear.  God provides that in the Armor of God.  We talked about the different pieces and how they protect us.

Then our contestants donned their protective gear: swim vests, swimmies and goggles:)  They had to run up the stairs while stuffed animals were flying toward them, climb over a bed, behind a chair, then swing from Eli’s swing (yes he has an IKEA swing in his room), under a desk, find a little brown dog in a laundry basket full of stuffed animals, over a bed and then back down the stairs while balls were flying at them.  It was so, so fun!

Don’t Miss Out! November 10, 2008

Okay friends!

I wanted to let you know about a charity campaign I recently found out about. It is a great charity in Nashville, Soles4Souls, that is trying to get money to buy 50,000 pairs of shoes raised in 50 days…

The cool thing is only $5 buys 2 pairs of shoes!! It takes under 2 minutes to donate and only three clicks – super easy! So if you think this is something you can do…five bucks, three clicks, two minutes = two pairs of shoes to someone in need, just visit http://www.50000shoes.com.

For me this simply means skipping one coffee purchase and my Pepsi run on the way to car line, but it also means two people somewhere get a new pair of shoes! Awesome feeling!

More importantly, this can only happen if we spread the word…so please pass this on to anyone you know…the people you work with, your mom, whoever!! Just keep the message going! You can copy and paste this info onto your email, blog, or Facebook page.

All donations are tax deductible of course. You can read the official press release here: http://www.forbes.com/prnewswire/feeds/prnewswire/2008/11/07/prnewswire200811071100PR_NEWS_USPR_____CLF039.html

Oh, and one person who donated will win a trip to Mexico to hand deliver the shoes they bought to someone who has never owned shoes before. Could you imagine giving someone their very first pair of shoes?

Thanks for your support!

Weekend Away!!!! November 10, 2008

I am a super above board blessed woman with an amazing husband and three terrific, incredible children.  But I have to admit the excitement of a weekend away with some of my best girl pals is so much fun!  I do feel a bit guilty though. any thoughts on that?

Mark thinks we are totally weird stalkers but Cookie, Tammi, Vanessa and I met up with my mom in Atlanta and went to a blog party Saturday night.  We all follow Whittaker Woman’s blog and she arranged to get together about 40 bloggers from all over the country for a little get together.  We  fit in some shopping, good food, some sleep and a lot of laughter.

That is where I have been and why I have been so silent.  I have fun stories and pictures to share over the next few days, so stay tuned!  Hey, who missed me?  And does anybody have any specific questions about the fun?

That Time Again November 7, 2008

It is that time again!  Time for another book review.  This book is a most unusual variety.  It is called Me, Myself & I AM created by Matthew Peters in partnership with Elisa Stanford.

Summary:

A new experience of God comes one question at a time in this fun and provocative journal. Made up entirely of insightful, profound, and occasionally ridiculous questions, Me, Myself, and I AM invites you to open to any page, open yourself to God, and be the author of yourown story.

Questions range from spiritually intriguing—

You overhear God talking about you. What do hear him saying?

to thought-provoking—

You are on a long car trip with a close friend who is not a Christian and the conversation turns to faith. What is your biggest fear about what your friend will ask or say?

to challenging—

Do you believe that all of Jesus’s followers have a responsibility to tell others about him?

to just plain fun—

If your life before you became a Christian were a movie, its title would be:

Animal House

As Good as It Gets

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

It’s a Wonderful Life

Me, Myself, and I AM will entertain, inspire, and get you thinking about your spiritual life from brand new angles. Whether you use Me, Myself, and I AM as a reflective tool, a way to start conversations with friends and family, or as a spiritual time capsule to look back on years later, their own words will create a powerful journey of self-discovery.

This has been more of an experience than just reading a book.  I am not yet all the way through it because it is very thought provoking and fun.  It is kind of like a guided journal experience but it takes you all over the map.  I am actually going to take it this weekend on a girls weekend for some fun conversation starters.  I do like to journal but I don’t always really go beyond what is happening that day so this book is stretching me to look at the corners and cupboards in my life.  This would be a neat Christmas gift for friends or family that seem to have everything, but are open to something new.

You can purchase it at your local bookstore or www.amazon.com.

I didn’t get an extra book to give away this time, sorry!  But I have been negligent in saying that my mom and Alli both won the books, Shape of Mercy!  So I will be sending those your way soon!  Congrats!

X-hausted November 6, 2008

I had high hopes of a great post with pictures for today but I am plumb tuckered out so I leave you with a verse from a book I recently started called A Long Obedience in the Same Direction:Discipleship in an Instant Society. (As I type on the computer and text people:)

It is written by Eugene H. Peterson, translator of The Message, which is a modern day translation of the Bible. I really like that translation and so many great authors I enjoy reference and quote Peterson that I decided I needed to check out some of his stuff. Well, he has written a lot of “stuff” and most of it is really “deep weeds”. This is one of his lighter books.

The book examines the Songs of Ascents which are Psalms 120-134. Peterson uses this verse in his first chapter and I have been mulling over it for the past few days. The translation just really makes it kick me in the gut! Interested to hear some of your reactions…

“Do you see what this means – all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running – and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in” (Heb. 12:1-2)

What really got me was…“strip down…extra spiritual fat, parasitic sins…”

I am trying to be brave enough to ask God what exactly in my life is causing my extra spiritual fat. Yikes! So whatcha think?

Smiley kind of day :) November 5, 2008

Yes, if you read my blog you already know that I love adding expression and smiley faces throughout my blog.  I guess you could say I am animated?  A friend laughed with me about my tendency to do the same things in my text messages.

Today has been truly a :) kind of day.  So this post will be random, scattered but that’s my brain tonight.

To start with…last night we had family night and I will do a whole post about that later once I can actually get my pictures to download, but we had so much fun :) Briefly, we voted on our dinner choices and had ballots, posters, balloons, a voting booth, the whole nine yards.  It was so fun and the kids really seemed to “get it.”

We finished up though with talking about God’s Sovereignty and this Scripture and this one that talk about how God is ultimately in control of who becomes our leader and also this Scripture that talks about how we need to submit to our authorities.  We discussed with the little guys how we need to be praying for our leaders.  Such a good refresher for me night before the election.  Great, great night! :)

Then this morning when I went to vote and stood for an hour and a half in line, it was so exciting.  It just felt electric.  Such a buzz and everybody was so amazed at the voter turnout.  Of course where I vote the people that came were all a bit upper to middle class (just being honest) and really dressed very nicely where I on the other hand had too long sweatpants (too tight to to be honest) and a sweatshirt.  I had nice non-showered hair and no makeup.  Needless to say…mental note…get showered and dress appropriately when voting at this station.

But it was so cool to sit and listen to people’s stories and opinions. Veterans and school teachers, doctors and lawyers, stay-at-home moms and grumpy old men.  I felt really proud to be able to be a part of the election process.  Then it was of course so fun to go wear my “I Vote” sticker (we did stickers for the kids last night too:) and get a free donut and coffee. :) I didn’t get to indulge in free chicken because by that time Mark had been home with 6 kids for 2 hours with no energy outlet and I felt he deserved to be rescued.

Moving on…then I could not face anymore time indoors with my three little Mexican jumping beans (that is not a slur my brother-in-law is Mexican:) so we indulged and went to FunDayGo with some bestest friends.  I forgot how much I LOVE that place.  Shout out to John and Shawna Gilman… that place is still so nice and clean and fun! :)   Eli skipped his nap to jump so when we finally got home a bit before 5pm we finished off with some quick grilled cheese sandwiches and Eli fell asleep at 6:15 in the playroom.  The other two were done with homework, baths, etc and in bed by 7:30pm.

And then to top it all off my sweet friends, him and her, dropped off a yummy Starbucks treat since they knew my Mark was away tonight.  Thanks and it is now officially an addiction, gotta love the Peppermint! :)

So I can’t say that I will stay up to see the results.  Although I am terribly interested, I cannot sacrifice my sleep and sanity when I can simply find out in the morning.  Plus McCall has been waking up at 5am since the time change, so sleep is so necessary these days :)

Hip hip hooray for good days!!  So two questions (and please give me a little love here) what voter treat did you reward yourself with and what was the best part of your day?

Here are some random things you might not know about me (you might not care either, sorry:)

  • I have a whale phobia, yes whales.  I have reocurring nightmares about them.
  • I love to snowski and used to be pretty good at it too.  In elementary school we lived in Breckenridge, CO and part of the weekly PE program was snowskiing lessons.
  • I shave my legs every day.  Unshaven legs is a very, very unlikely ocurrence in my life.  I can’t stand it and now Mark is spoiled.
  • A 15 minute shower is the norm for me, at least now that my kids are a touch older.  It takes a while to shave my legs!
  • In college used to love to walk on the barrier wall of the sixth floor of a parking garage in downtown Charleston.  I don’t really struggle with a fear of heights.  It really is fun:)  Apparently I was a monkey as a toddler as well.
  • I played the violin in high school and college.
  • I spent a weekend vacationing on the shore of the Black Sea.  It was absolutely gorgeous.
  • I really enjoy watching Phineas and Ferb.
  • I get lost very, very easily.  Just about anywhere.
  • I didn’t get my driver’s license until I was 17.
  • I don’t cry often (unless I am pregnant.)  And I certainly don’t cry in public UNLESS I am mad.  Then I have a hard time controlling the tears.  So if you see me crying…watch out.  I would get out of the way.  Yeah it is kind of weird.  Commercials, movies, real life sad situations, death, sickness, those things affect me but don’t produce tears usually.  But tick me off and the floodgates open.  Don’t try to analyze me, please, you might make me mad:)

Random I know:)  Anybody else want to share?

Halloween Fun November 1, 2008

My two favorite parts of trick or treating tonight…

After the first couple of houses Eli gets the idea that if you ring the door bell, most likely some nice big person WILL give him candy.  So then after each house he asks, “Are we going to another house for candy? Are we doing it again?”  He stumbles along in his cute little Mickey Mouse costume determined to keep up with his brothers and get more candy!

And (this was my favorite part of Halloween as a kid too, when we did get to trick or treat…that’s another post) when we all were laying on the floor in a circle with a big pile of candy in front of us.  Tonight we each took turns picking which candy we wanted.  It was so cute and so fun!

Pat went trick or treating with us and when we got back we changed into warm jammies, drank hot chocolate and watched Charlie Brown Pumpkin show.  So fun!

I am also so thankful that my boys were so easy to please this year with their costumes.  McCall wanted to be a knight so we used our Armor of God and just rigged up a “Sir Candy A Lot” title with duct tape, Haig was Dash from the Incredibles just like last year and Eli wore the Mickey Mouse costume that both his brothers have worn in years past.  It was nice not to have to buy new costumes.

We borrowed a big old wagon from Kimberly and Toby which made the boys happy and meant less whining.  And the neighborhood behind us is great for trick or treating.  There are lots of families with little ones.  And this year we didn’t try to fit in festivals and visiting relatives across town.  We simplified with one activity and it made for a nice, calm and super fun Halloween:)
