I have wanted to do some fun family nights for a couple of months but never got myself organized or motivated enough to get it together. But my friend Vanessa moved to town this summer and challenged me to partner with her to do Family Nights. So we will do them together, which means twice as many creative ideas but only half the work:) And accountability to actually make it happen.
Our first family night was Fire Safety Night. We visited the fire station, practiced “stop, drop and roll”, crawling under the smoke, tested the smoke alarms, made “cups of fire” out of red, orange, yellow and blue tissue paper and then made jello “fire” desserts. We also ate yummy chili and corn bread like the firemen do. They like that right? We also talked about the way when we need help we can call on God. We don’t need an alarm system just prayer. We learned Psalm 116:1-2 which teaches us that God bends down and listens to us.
Vanessa posted some great pictures of the evening here.
Family Night #2 was a little less organized but it was all about Fall. We tried to make candy corn necklaces but it turned out to not be a little finger friendly craft and actually very difficult for the adults too. But we liked eating them. We grilled out corn, had steamed veggie medley, corn and croissants. We had a mini pumpkin hunt and then ended the evening by carving a pumpkin and talked about how God cleans us out spiritually the way we clean out a pumpkin physically.
